joomla

The content management system I used for this website is joomla. Meanwhile in version 3 it provides great functionality and tons of modules to integrate to your website.

There has been great progress since version 1.5 (left picture), where I found many bugs that had to be fixed directly in the php-scripts. Now, some years later the installation and configuration is straightforward. Internationalization is now included. There are many great design templates so that you can make your website look special. It's based on a responsive design, so that the website can scale to different devices like tablets and mobiles.

a short list of free programs I use:

- paint.net: easy to use photo editing software, supports layers (essential for image editing)

- raw therapee: raw converter to process the camera's raw files. (incl. image processing functions)

- Microsoft ICE (Image Composing Editior): create (stitch) panorama images

- irfan view: batch resizing and converting of pictures, supports watermarks

- truecrypt: open source encryption software to created encrypted partitions and disks

- photomatix (essentials): create hdr images (commercial)

- open Office: I rarely need a complete office suite, so the open source one is more than good enough.

- notepad++: a powerful text editor which is far better than the windows notepad

OpenCV = Open Source ComputerVision library.
OpenCV is originally a c-based programming interface that offers many simple AND more complex standard algorithms for Computer Vision / image processing.
It takes some time to get the basics of the algorithms and data structures because C functions tend to have many function parameters (not object oriented), but since 2008 the O'Reilly book "Learning OpenCV" is very good to cope with the library.

CUDA

CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) is a framework to program NVIDIA graphics processing units. Due to the parallel architecture of graphics cards it is possible to accelarate some computer programs. The algorithms should be splitable into independent data units that are processed with the same algorithm.
